The Troubles of These Times:  Three Reasons Why Historians Can Be Helpful, and Three Reasons Why They Are of No Help At All
This week’s guest speaker will be Boulder Rotarian Patty Limerick, 12:00 noon Wednesday via Zoom (link below).  Limerick will be introduced by Dave Stewart.  She is the Faculty Director and Chair of the Board of the Center of the American West at the University of Colorado where she is also a Professor of History.  In her adventures as an Applied Historian, Limerick has found many ways that thinking about history can provide useful guidance and, often enough, inspiration.

Community Grant's Second Arts and Culture Grants
The Community Grants committee recently awarded three Arts and Culture three grants for a total of $6,000.  Featured this week is the second of those grants.  
 
KRFC, Public Radio for the Front Range was awarded $2,500 to support their “Live@Lunch” weekly music program.  Our grant will help to purchase essential equipment upgrades to accommodate larger musical acts and provide compatibility with the station’s new terrestrial radio tower.  Dan Mackey presented our check to Jen Parker, Executive Director.
 
Climate Change and Rotary's 4 Way Test
Member pictureContinuing our focus on Rotary and the Environment, last week Dave Stewart shared a presentation – Climate and the 4 Way Test.  Starting with climate science and the carbon cycle, Dave argued that we need to to view climate globally, not locally, and remember that climate is not the same as weather.  For the Zoom link, CLICK HERE.  To see Dave's slides, CLICK HERE.

President Del's Priorities and Plans
During his first meeting as President, Del Benson outlined his priorities and thoughts for RY 2020-21.  He touched on the challenges of declining noon membership and the resultant reduction in income and charitable pledges to support our service mission.  Del then outlined his priorities and a "U+2" Time, Talent and Treasure Challenge for every member:  
  • Bring in two new members
  • Double contributions to Rotary funding needs
  • Help on two funding initiatives
  • Give time to two additional service projects
  • Organize new projects and outcomes
  • Attend two more meetings every quarter
  • Combine categories engaging U+2 and have twice the fun and accomplishments

Urgent/Current Announcements: 
RCFC's Investment Fellowship meets immediately following this Wednesday's noon meeting  (same Zoom link).  All are welcome!  Investment expertise is not required.  Discussion topic: “Will the Stock Market Keep Soaring?”  The total U.S. stock market has climbed 50% over the past 12 months.
 
The Board of Directors has approved Irene Josey's applications for membership. She is Larimer County's Treasurer and is sponsored by Carrie Baumgart and Cindy DeGroot.  Comments regarding Josey's membership should be directed to the club secretary, Kathy Nicol, or Irene's sponsors in writing no later than 8:00AM, April 28, 2021.
 
Spring Highway Clean up is set for Saturday May 8, 2021.  ALL RCFC members and guests are encouraged - many hands make quick work!  Please let Ron Stoops or Troy Tafoya know if you will participate.  As usual we will meet at the Sundance Saloon on Highway 14 about 7:45 am for coffee and donuts and start about 8:00 am. 
 
The annual Service Above Self celebration originally scheduled for June 2, has been rescheduled for Tuesday evening, August 3, in the Children's Garden at the Gardens on Spring Creek.  Details to follow.   
 
Older Announcements Still Relevant:
The Community Grants committee is now accepting grant applications under the Youth Programs category.  Details may be found on our Club website.  Application deadline is Friday, May 21st, with grants awarded in June.
 
President Del Benson announced a $10,000 donation to the RCFC Legacy Fund from David Everitt and the Everitt family, in support of the Good and Lucky Non-Event!  This brings the total raised to $70,000, plus a $19,000 matching grant for the United Way Fire Relief fund!  Total raised was $89,000!!  Thank you Rotarians for your generous support of our community.
 
Marty Bachman and Sally Lee report that just 35 families shopping at King Soopers earned $524.87 last quarter - just for shopping!  That's a $525 donation that goes directly into our charitable budget.  If you haven’t signed up yet, see Sally or Marty.
 
General reminder of our Fellowships schedule.  First Wednesday: Peace. Second Wednesday: History. Third Wednesday: Investments.  Fourth Wednesdays: Science.  All meet immediately following the Wednesday noon Zoom meeting, using the same login. 
 
Reminder that RCFC has a 'one-stop' Finances email - treasurer@fortcollinsrotary.org.  President Del reminds members that 'the buck stops here' and asked that any complaints or concerns also be directed to him.
