Sanford Labs – Gold Mine repurposed for International Science Research
On the July 26th luncheon meeting of Rotary at the Lincoln Center, we will hear the story of the Sanford Underground Research Facility from Deb Wolf, IDEA Officer and Director of Education and Public Relations, following an introduction by Colin Campbell. Our fellow Rotarian grew up in Lead, S. Dakota where his grandfather and father worked in the Homestake Gold Mine. The historic mine (in the Black Hills) grew during 120 years of operation to become the largest producer in the western hemisphere. Then its underground tunnels and infrastructure were converted to become a national science laboratory (initially funded by NSF, and now DOE, State of S. Dakota, etc.).Our guest speaker will describe how the mine was repurposed into the current Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). It has approximately 30 major experiments with international participation to explore neutrinos, dark matter, gravity waves, underground super-cleanroom engineering, autonomous mining vehicle engineering, deep underground microbe biology, geothermal engineering, geology, etc. READ MORE...
On Wednesday, July 19th, Rotary Club of Fort Collins’ luncheon section welcomed Jared Orsi, a professor of history at Colorado State University, specializing in environmental and borderlands history. Jared started with the idea, variously enunciated by Ken Burns, Wallace Stegner, and/or Frederick Law Olmstead (the famous American architect in the late 1800s), that America's National Parks are America's Best Idea. Olmstead, in a report for the state of California about Yosemite, praised the American concept of parks democratically open to all the people in contrast with Europe where the parks were private estates open to only the rich and connected. He somewhat diluted the impact of this sentiment by suggesting that the native people actually living in the parks should be removed. READ MORE...
This week, our Science and Engineering Fellowship meets after our Wednesday lunch meeting. Our featured speaker, Deb Wolf, Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), will be joining our discussion.
We were excited to induct three new members this past week, Marissa Allen, Tony Sundermeier, and Ann Dunne. Please introduce yourself and welcome them at our next meeting.
Our Community Grants Committee recently awarded a youth program grant to the Food Bank for Larimer County. They will use our grant to provide snacks to every child who visits their mobile Lunch Lab meal program this summer. This take-home snack will be a supplement to the free lunch they eat on site.
