Colorado State University’s Role in National Security (Lunch Meeting)
On Wednesday, August 2, the luncheon meeting of Rotary will hear from Wiley Barnes, Executive Director of the CSU Office of Defense Engagement. Our guest speaker is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, with 25 years of service as an intelligence officer and military strategist. After his introduction, Wiley will talk to the point that the CSU land-grant ethos has long inspired the community of faculty, students, research professionals, and alumni to do good by rolling up their sleeves, solving hard problems, and creating better lives “for the benefit of the citizens of Colorado, the United States, and the world,” as the CSU mission states. CSU has an exceptionally strong track record at creating positive impact, so it makes sense to broaden the impact to the national security sector. This led the Office of the Vice President for Research to hire Wiley Barnes as the first executive director of the Office of Defense Engagement. Coming from his extensive experience in threat assessment and creative problem-solving, he will discuss an array of reasonably likely and consequential challenges our nation faces. These risks drive us to emphasize resiliency in our personal lives and for society as a whole. Our speaker’s view is that CSU is well positioned to solve hard problems in the 21st century to increase our resiliency and national security. READ MORE...
Rotary & The Pursuit of Happiness (Evening Meeting)
Please join us Wednesday Evening, August 2nd, at Sweetwater Brewery to hear Dr. Thomas inspirational message around "Rotary & The Pursuit of Happiness" which describes those actions/behaviors that stimulate feelings of joy and happiness (including engaging in 4-way test actions). Dr. Thomas serves as a coach/consultant, particularly in the field of behavioral medicine and preventive health care, life coaching, leadership training, catalyzing success in others, conflict management, assertiveness training; and stress management. He has developed and leads innovative Seminars about creativity, success, wellness, leadership, self-esteem, education/learning, and relationship enrichment. He is a powerful and inspirational public speaker. In Lloyd’s own words, “Happiness is the mental stateof experiencing positive or pleasant emotions, not dependent on events outside your skin. It is the highlyindividualized and ever-changing dynamic of being alive/conscious and depends on the meaning we give to incoming information…usually by way of the five senses and or what we attend to (like our internal experience). “ Further, according to our speaker, “The mental state of happiness is physiologically related to internal “balance” between pleasure (dopamine etc.) and pain/stress (cortisol). Too much or too little of anything becomes a negative. Plato’s Golden Mean. “ Toward that end, our speaker will point out many daily activities that can contribute to one’s happiness. READ MORE...
