Slang and Other Euphemisms
This Wednesday, August 28, Dr. Bob Meroney will once again entertain, inform and beguile his fellow Rotarians on yet another subject possibly suitable for inclusion in the Journal of Irreproducible Results. He reports that the English language is not set in stone. It has evolved from generation to generation. Our conversational argot is filled with quirky but useful and sometimes descriptive “Slang and other Euphemisms”. Terms and phrases that are now patois, many of which arose hundreds of years ago, continue to be used as English shortcuts with special meanings. READ MORE...
Kathy Ziola, author of the book “Live Compassion” and certified trainer for the Center for Non Violent Communication, provided a primer on this subject. To prepare for non-violent communication, she asked the audience to become “present” in the moment by closing their eyes and focus on their breath. Once prepared, a person can consciously move away from being judgmental and assigning blame and towards understanding. To practice this skill, she asked audience members to pair up, with one member describing what they had done this morning while the other members listened closely and then to reverse roles. Listening closely without judging the other person leads to empathetic listening and responding. It also leads to an increase in collaboration and empathy between the parties involved. Ms. Ziola lives and works in Loveland. READ MORE...
Celebrating its 20th year, the Larimer County Spellbinders club and its 45 members, including Rotarian and past district governor Mike Forney, visited 229 classrooms in 41 schools last year. While Rotary has a magic precious to us, spellbinders have a magic that they wish to share: spellbinding storytelling. The stories they tell are told, not read, preserving the long tradition which has imparted society’s collective wisdom, history and shared values since the dawn of human civilization. Learn how stories are found, developed, enhanced and delivered in this presentation, as Mike Forney tells us more about Spellbinders and the stories that build bonds across generations. READ MORE...
John’s daughter, Nancy Oliver, is planning an "early" birthday celebration for John in conjunction with the AG Day BBQ, Saturday, September 7 prior to the CSU/UNC Football game. John will turn 104 on December 24, right in the middle of the holidays, so Nancy is planning a special late-summer birthday to be part of the Ag Day festivities. She will have special tables set where friends can stop by and wish our Johnny “Happy Birthday”. According to Nancy, “Ag Day is so close to Dad's heart.” Click HERE to watch a video about John's connection to Ag day, and click HERE for Ag Day BBQ tickets!
