Using Ketamine to Treat PTSD
This Wednesday, Rotary welcomes Dr. Scott Shannon as our guest speaker for the luncheon meeting at the Lincoln Center. Following his introduction by Stacy Plemmons, he will talk about the Colorado Proposition 122 passed last November, which allows people 21 and older to grow and share psychedelic mushrooms. Sales of ‘magic’ mushrooms will not be allowed until a regulatory system can be put in place, probably late in 2024. In the meantime, research on psilocybin, the hallucination-inducing compound derived from psychedelic mushrooms, ketamine and other hallucinogenic substances is ongoing.
Last week one of our own, Dr Lloyd Thomas, spoke on a subject that should be of interest to all members - Rotary and the Pursuit of Happiness. The information was supported by quotes from wise men, from Socrates to present-day cartoonists. Perhaps a surprise, cartoons may contain thoughts to live by. Lloyd started with a quote from E. E. Cummings…”Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human heart”. READ MORE...
Thank you Henry Weisser, Bob Lawrence, and participants for 19 years of monthly discussions. Learning about History and Current Events after regular noon Rotary meetings opens our eyes and hearts. As new Chair, Del Benson will be carrying on the legacy, facilitate interests, and encourage broad inputs from members.
This week, our Rotary History and Current Events Fellowship meets after our Wednesday lunch meeting on the 14th. Former District Governor, Lynne Baker, will facilitate the discussions. Recent events in the news prompted topics that we might want to address in the future, and each involved finding better ways to communicate. Consequently, we will start our next era by exploring how to communicate better amongst ourselves. READ MORE...
Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen (Lunch - June 21st)
The luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Fort Collins on June 21st at the Lincoln Center provides us with the opportunity to get acquainted with our new Sheriff, John Feyen. Following his introduction by John Runkles, our guest speaker will fill us in on his background and plans for the administration of his office in the years to come. In his pre-election (2022) interview with the North Forty News, our speaker shared that he was originally from a small farming community in Iowa. John moved to Kansas City, MO. in 1987 where he met his wife while serving as a paramedic. Four years later, they moved to Larimer County (primarily for family) where they both continued serving as paramedics/firefighters for the citizens of Loveland, Berthoud, and the Big Thompson Canyon. Lucinda Kerschensteiner is seeking a Rotary host family for September 17 – 23 (approx.) for a fellow Rotarian from a South African Rotary Club. Uhambo USA has been awarded a Rotary Int’l Vocational Training Team grant which allows for a team from South Africa to come to Fort Collins to conduct some training in the disability sector for two weeks. Lucinda will be hosting 2 of the team members and we need a host for one member – he is a retired engineer. Martin will be hosting him for the first week. The team will have a busy itinerary so you will not need to entertain them during the work days. Some assistance with transportation and after work activities may be needed. Interested? Please reach out to lucinda@uhambousa.org
Thanks Rotarians for spending your Saturday morning repainting the baseboards at Respite Care. Because of your hard work, clients and their families will enjoy a “refreshed” environment.
