Flying Cars
On Wednesday, 9 October 2024, our Club will host automotive expert, Tim Jackson. Tim, a private pilot, will describe the intersection today of airplanes and automobiles including material from his book “Dude, Where’s My Flying Car?”. Flying cars is a concept that’s been around since the early 20th century. Futurists have made an industry out of forecasting the arrival of a vehicle that will make road congestion obsolete. The recent proliferation of drones, some very large and capable drones, along with a rapidly increasing use of military UAV’s, as well as Vertical Takeoff and Landing vehicles (VTOLs) and STOL’s has reignited interest in everyday flying cars. The development of ever lighter and stronger materials along with improved navigation and avoidance technologies have brought the potential for “flying cars” closer, yet other serious challenges remain. Among them cost, noise/air pollution compliance and fuel density. Tim Jackson has spent 30 years in the automotive industry including as president/CEO of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) and he produced the annual Denver Auto Show for 18 years. Tim and his wife, Beverly, reside in Denver.
They’ve graciously hosted the Evening Group meetings for a few months now. Its about time that we learn more about them! Ashley Fueger, one of the four co-owners of the established brewery, will be giving the group a rundown on Purpose’s history, how their business has evolved over time, and the niche that she feels they fit into in the local brewing community. Ashley’s loves her barrels, her cats, and her partner James Lloyd (who is also a co-owner). Grab a drink before you come upstairs and learn some of what it took to get into your hand.
For our first in-person Rotary meeting of October, a positive, fast-paced, exciting presentation by Ryun Williams, CSU Women’s Basketball head coach, introduced us to the current status and some of the history of coaching and recruiting for the women’s basketball program at CSU. Coach Williams started with a focus on current activities. The players practice every day from 7:00 AM to around 10:30 AM, then off to class. Seven of the current players, ranging from freshmen to 5th year seniors (who are eligible because they lost a year to Covid), accompanied him to our meeting. Each one introduced herself, including where she came from – ranging from Northern Colorado University (transfer) to Latvia and Sweden. All through his presentation, Coach Williams returned to his emphasis on recruiting young women who are not only good players (one of the freshmen scored 2000 points in high school; the young woman from Latvia is the number one player in 3-on-3 in Latvia) but also young women of high character. And he returned to this emphasis on character with respect to a number of aspects of being a member of the team. READ MORE...
Elections are next month. Prepare your heart and mind to vote. Perhaps the 4-Way Test can serve as a guide. Rotarian Irene Josey will facilitate your inputs for our timely discussion on 9 October. Questions to ponder follow:
