115 Years of a Western Tradition
On Wednesday, March 13th, Fort Collins Rotarians welcome our guest speaker, Trent Johnson, to the noon meeting at the Lincoln Center. Trent is the owner of Greeley Hat Works. His hats are legendary. He will be introduced by Bill West. Trent and his predecessors have fashioned cowboy hats for presidents and other world dignitaries, and his company has been doing so since 1909. Last week we were entertained (and informed) by our resident polymath, Dr Bob Meroney by his talk Animal Crimes (which included cases brought against inanimate objects). A book by Edward Payson was published in 1903 covering the topic of animal (legal) rights. Legal proceedings against animals go back at least to the 1st century, peaked in the 16th century with a total of 200 count by the 19th century. In fact, cases are recorded in the Old Testament and continued through the 20th century. Whether animals can be tried is really a question of personhood. Do animals (especially intelligent species, some of which have observed social structure) qualify and thus have a right to a trial? Plato (400BC) argued a neighbor should be appointed a judge of even inanimate objects to determine if they should be exiled. READ MORE...
On March 13th, following the lunch meeting, the History and Current Events Fellowship will be meeting. Our club is bringing a Braver Angels workshop to town and we will have an update.
Rotarians save the date April 17 for our Service Above Self event. Event will start at 5:30pm for cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment. We will have a program honoring Rotarians and our accomplishments in the past year.
Foothills Rotary Presents Special luncheon with Astronaut Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger
This talk will cover the early NASA training (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo) programs. Then it will go into Shuttle and ISS training, where Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger has first hand knowledge. Finally, it will look at exploration training (return to Moon and onto Mars) and the significance of Earth analogs. Read more and register at this link.
At last week's lunch meeting, Robin Steele presented a banner to President Randy, which she received while visiting RC of Roatan to discuss the global grant they are hosting that provides underserved women living in impoverished communities with microloans and education to start or grow enterprises and become self-sufficient.

We are excited to share our most recent teacher of the month, Katie Boisen. Kate, a 4th grade teacher at Zach Elementary, is a team leader who builds a class community while recognizing and responding to each student’s uniqueness. She is active on several committees including the district literacy committee.
