Public Deliberation on Complex and Controversial Topics
On Wednesday, November 8th, Martin Carcasson, a professor in the Communication Studies department of CSU, will be introduced by Bill Timpson to speak on the CSU Center for Public Deliberation.  This will be at the Rotary luncheon meeting at the Lincoln Center. The CSU Center for Public Deliberation (“CPD”) is dedicated to enhancing local democracy through improved public communication and community problem-solving.  Per our guest speaker, “Our aim is to improve the way our community is able to talk through complex issues so that we can arrive at better decisions. Deliberation requires open spaces for citizens to come together, good and fair information to help structure the conversation, and skilled facilitators to guide the process. The CPD is dedicated to providing these three key ingredients to Northern Colorado.”

RECAP: Women’s Health in the Global Community
Last week, RCFC member Dr Larry Kieft reminded us of the state of Women’s Health in the Global Community.  He began with 3 vignettes (with photos) that gave the data to follow a very personal focus.

First was Blessings Story about a young woman Larry met (in Jos, Nigeria) at her seamstress shop. This young woman’s story illustrates the potential effects of a male-dominated culture - rape, adolescent pregnancy, shame, abandonment and AIDS. Next, we heard the stories of 4 neonates (pictured) abandoned at a local hospital illustrating the results of poverty (the fathers were farmers and the social status of mothers) and the lack of modern maternal care (each mother died of eclampsia or complications of triplet delivery). The third story was described by 3 photographs - a young woman is seen standing outside a schoolroom door while inside younger students attend class. (1. Women are less likely to get an education and 2. Schools require uniforms and a tuition fee meaning many cannot afford their children an education).  READ MORE...

4-minute Rotary Leadership Academy Survey
Kerrie emailed out a leadership academy survey recently. If you already filled out the survey, thanks and no action is required!

Our goal is twofold:
  1. We want to establish a reputation for the Rotary Club of Fort Collins as a place where individuals can grow as leaders in their personal and professional lives

  2. We want to help cultivate the future leadership of our own club

1996 Thowback - Sonny Lubick
Rotary meetings are known for having great speakers. One of our favorites is Sonny Lubick, shown here speaking to our club in 1996. Sonny has returned many times to talk football, leadership, and most recently discussing the Name, Image, and Likeness rules. We thank our program committee and all our members involved in finding speakers for keeping us informed and entertained each week.
If you have program ideas or would like to get involved in the program committee, please contact Dave Stewart or Stacy Plemmons for noon programs and Kevin Davies for evening programs.
