Charlie Hoxmeier graduated from Colorado State University in 2014 with a PhD in microbiology and went on to complete his postdoctoral work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The presentation takes a look at the origins of beer and how it has had an influence on major events in human history.
Archeologists have found residues of beer making in pots going back to 10,000 BCE. It discusses how the effort to brew, distribute, and store beer have led to many of the scientific advances in agriculture, understanding biology and botany, pasteurization, germ theory, modern chemistry, modern medicine, and engineering advances such as refrigeration. The primary ingredients and steps in brewing beer will be reviewed. Beer is the only alcoholic beverage that actually hydrates you because it's 95 percent water!
Charlie started brewing in 2006, leading to the opening of Gilded Goat Brewing Company with his family in 2017. In 2018, Charlie started teaching in the Fermentation Science and Technology Program at Colorado State University and in 2022 was appointed as an Assistant Professor to continue teaching and oversee the teaching, service, and research laboratories associated with the program
