This is a fairly new award initiated two years ago. It recognizes a Rotarian for their all-around contribution to the success of the Rotary Club. Last years winner, Bill Schaffter, announced the recipient of this award.

Because of its emphasis on serving youth, this year’s Max Getts Award is being given to two deserving recipients. Although he is the Rotarian, she has been with him every step of the way, including the year when he succeeded Max as president. That “every step of the way” comment also includes their climbing all 54 of Colorado’s fourteeners together, as well as hiking, biking, skiing, and rock climbing. They have traveled extensively in the US and many parts of the world. In addition to his interest in music – and a voice unequalled in this club – he has been involved with group study exchange, world community exchange and youth exchange...

It is in the area of youth exchange where they have made a huge contribution, and made a difference in the lives of so many of our exchange students. They have served as host parents to at least 13 exchange students, and been chaperones for the district exchange student bus trip through the western United States on 20 different occasions, for two weeks at a time – sometimes with only two weeks’ notice. There is no doubt that the 4-Way Test has been applied on many occasions during these adventures! As one member of the District Youth Exchange Committee stated, they have been good shepherds of all the young people in their care every year. This same member also said that if it weren’t for her, he would have run “screaming into the woods” on several occasions when dealing with all the rules, regulations and paperwork the program.

Of course, one of the highlights of each year’s district conference is the program put on by the exchange students, capped off by singing and signing, “Love in any Language,” usually led by our own Bill Moellenhoff. It is obvious to all that their involvement in the youth exchange program truly has been a labor of love. Please help me in recognizing the recipients of the 2013-2104 Max Getts 4-Way Test Award, .Bill and Gentry Moellenhoff.
