ANNOUNCEMENTS

In case any Rotarians missed the obituary in the Coloradoan, a memorial service for Gene Markley will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, March 22, 2:00, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2000 Stover Street. Gene joined RCFC in 1949, and remained active until the past few years.  He was club president 1955-56, and was loved and respected by all.  His Rotary legacy is carried on by granddaughters Carrie Baumgart, and Cindy DeGroot.

This Saturday, March 25th is the evening of the annual "Black Tie Bingo" party sponsored by the Rotary After-Work Club and Idea Wild.  There will be food from 6 different local restaurants, free Margaritas, five bingo games with great prizes, a silent auction, a presentation of six wildlife conservation projects and lots of fun and fellowship.  Rotarian, Wally Van Sickle would like to fill at least 8 places at a table exclusively for our club members.  If you would like to attend, please talk with Lloyd Thomas or reserve a place for yourself online at: ideawild@ideawild.org or FCBlacktiebingo.com.

Robert Hope, secretary for Rotaract, announced an April 1 event to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will be held on the intermural fields at CSU from 12 to 6 PM. A series of activities are being offered. The entry fee is $10 per person with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.

A panel of experts will discuss veteran’s benefits for seniors and answer questions from the audience. Some of the topics will include: eligibility and enrollment, mental health services, aid & attendance, and navigating the VA system. Questions? Call the Office on Aging at 970-498-7750 or the Chilson Senior Center at 970-962-2423.

Martin Limbird urged members to attend the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, June 10-14. Registrants can save $75 per person if registering by March 31.

Phyllis Abt reminded us that the Greeley club will be celebrating their one hundredth anniversary on May 18. The speaker will be the Rotary International president.

Bart Kingman thanked Richard Skaggs for picking him up for Rotary, and requested that anyone willing to pick him up for Rotary, please contact Bart.

Stacy Plemmons noted that Tom Peterson’s glioblastoma had returned, and it is inoperable.  He is experiencing balance and short term memory issues, and appreciates phone calls from Rotarians.

Stacy also noted that Max Getts is in the Lemay Avenue Rehab, just south of Harmony, and appreciates visits.  In good news, over the last several months Max has been working with The Rotarian Magazine, and has been notified that they will run a feature story in the June Rotarian (available approximately May 25) on RCFC’s 4-Way Test School Program, created by Max and RCFC members in the 90’s.  Rotary passion lives on in Max!

It was announced that this years’ Service In Action celebration will occur as an evening event this year, Wednesday April 19, to accommodate spouses and Satellite members.  Please save the date.

People are asking about Rotary's next outing into the wonders of nature.  I am providing you with links to City of Fort Collins http://www.fcgov.com/naturalareas/ and Larimer County http://www.larimer.org/news/newsDetail.cfm?id=4495 departments of natural resources who offer guided hikes night and day. For some events you can just show up, others need for you to register, and all are free. It is my and others' professional opinion that we all need to support programs that already exist, rather than expending energies to create new events which diffuse participation.  Rotarians can learn from others and recruit new members in the process.
I discussed this approach with our Fellowship Committee yesterday and we agreed with this approach and perhaps to offer some Rotary reflection times after some events at a restaurant, coffee shop or beer garden.   I do not plan to promote all of the events that are offered again over the summer, but encourage you to check out the web sites on occasion.  We might select a few programs to emphasize and to solicit your participation.  Let me know your thoughts.
Get out and enjoy the grand canvas that is washed with new paints and witnessed with new insights by the moment. Take a kid and an adult with you.  Share your contagious enthusiasm and show that Rotary has diverse interests. - Del Benson

LEGACY FUND - AUTOMATE YOUR GIVING
A number of Rotarians have their gift to the Legacy Fund made quarterly as a part of their payment of dues and meals.  Last year this amounted to nearly $27,000 which helps bring our total closer to the $1million goal by August 2018, for our 100th anniversary.  It’s easy and every donation helps in assuring Rotary’s service in action forever.

If you have announcements please email them to erin@ahome4life.com or just reply to the Rotogear email to get listed in the Rotogear.

Homelessness in Fort Collins and Best Practice Solutions
According to a 2016 point-in- time survey, 290 people in Fort Collins were identified as homeless. Of those, 21 percent said they were staying outside, in unsheltered locations. Fort Collins has emergency shelter capacity of approximately 298 beds. This Wednesday, Rotarians will hear the January 2017 point-in- time survey results, when Michele Christensen, Director of Program Development at Housing Catalyst, and Zachary Penland, Program Manager for the Redtail Ponds Permanent Supportive Housing program will cover homelessness data, as well as causes and challenges.
Christensen and Penland will also share an overview of permanent supportive housing (PSH), considered a best practice solution. Redtail Ponds, developed and managed by Housing Catalyst, is Northern Colorado’s first Permanent Supportive Housing community, offering 60 apartments for people with disabilities who have experienced homelessness. Presenters will share their experience working with residents and how why this is a best practice to end homelessness.
Michele Christensen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Colorado. She earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, and has over 25 years’ experience working in child and family welfare and with homeless families. She joined Housing Catalyst in 2005, and is responsible for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of quality of life programs and services. Michele was part of the Redtail Ponds development team and has researched best practices and supportive housing developments around the country. Michele interacts regularly with service delivery partners and negotiates agreements on service
delivery/designs and monitors contractual arrangements.
Zachary Penland has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of North Dakota, and has worked as a case manager and therapist for those experiencing homelessness and mental health issues through SummitStone Health Partners. He was the Director of the Murphy Center for Hope, a one-stop homelessness resource center, and serves on numerous committees’ and boards focusing on addressing homelessness in our community and region. He moved to Fort Collins in 2001, and manages day to day operations at Redtail Ponds through a multi-disciplinary staff.
