Mekana was the only player in the NCAA to be in the Top 10 in hitting percentage (.401) and blocks per game (1.65). She set a Mountain West record with 19 blocks in a match, and led the conference in both assist blocks and total blocks. Finally, she earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors a conference record-tying four times. She was recently picked as the Most Valuable Player in the Hilton Classic Tournament, played here in Fort Collins on August 29-30. May 14, 2008 Track Stars
The Mountain West Conference announced that Colorado State senior Emily Pearson has earned a share of its Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honor. Pearson set both the Colorado State and Jack Christiansen Track heptathlon records by scoring 5,439 points at Friday's Glenn Morris Invitational in Fort Collins. A product of La Junta, Colo., Pearson won four of the seven events, including scoring 730 points after running the 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes, 27.09 seconds. Her heptathlon score is currently the 11th best in the nation, according to TrackShark.com, and was just 81 points shy of the NCAA automatic mark. It ranks first in the league so far this season and fifth all-time in the MWC. The Mountain West Conference also announced that Colorado State senior Drew Morano has earned a share of its Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honor. Morano, a native of Paola, Kan., broke his own, three-week-old 400-meter school record Friday at the Arkansas Twilight meet in Fayetteville, Ark., with a regional-qualifying time of 45.65. Morano, part of a small group of Rams competing at the meet, initially broke his own Colorado State record at the Sun Angel Classic in Arizona on April 12 with a time of 45.91. In program history, he now owns the top three times in that event. Morano's time currently ranks first in the league this season, improves on his No. 2 ranking in the MWC all-time record book and is eighth nationally, according to TrackShark.com. Shelly Godkin introduced CSU basketball assistant coach Nico Medved. Nico talked a little about the rebuilding process of the team and then introduced Marcus Walker. Marcus is a junior college transfer from Kansas City, Mo. Last year he played at Indian Hills Community College before transfering to CSU. Marcus became the first CSU player to score 40 points or more in 20 years after scoring 43 points for the Top of the World Classic Tournament record nov. 17. The mark is the top point performance in the Mountain West this season. He is currently in the top five in scoring in the conference. Shelly Godkin introduced CSU Volleyball assistant coach Jesse Mahoney. Jesse reviewed the successful season before introducing one of four all conference players on the team, Jamie Strauss. Jesse Mahoney begins his second season with the Rams, serving as the recruiting coordinator, as well as working with the blocking schemes and middle blockers on the court and various other day-to-day jobs. Mahoney came to Colorado State from Fort Hays State, where he was the head coach from 1999-2004. While at Fort Hays, Mahoney tallied a record of 107-82, including a mark of 56-12 in 2003 and 2004. Jaime is from Fort Collins but went to Windsor High School. She becomes the seventh player from Fort Collins to play volleyball at Colorado State since 1982. Jamie is a junior and had a very productive season. She played in all 30 matches and 110 games, as an outside hitter...Finished the season with a team-leading 392 kills...Hit .217 and averaged 3.56 kills per game...Set career bests in every category...Notched 24 kills against both BYU and TCU for a career high...Had a least 10 kills in 23 matches...Also had a career-attack high at BYU with 58 swings...Set her career high in digs with 22 vs. Missouri State...Had six blocks against Wyoming...Had 64 blocks for the season, averaging 0.58 per game...Finished third on the team with 284 digs...Earned 13 double-doubles...Named the Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP. Bill Schaffter introduced CSU Golf Coach, Jamie Bernal to introduce one of hie golfers, Dustin Morris. Colorado State sophomore Dustin Morris was selected as the Mountain West Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for November. In Colorado State's only tournament of the month, Morris, a Crosby, Texas, native, led the Rams to a record-breaking finish to close the fall season, and a second consecutive tournament title at the Agua-Caliente Air Force Invitational, held Nov. 10-11, at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs, Calif. Morris captured his first career title on the 6,582-yard par 72 course, carding rounds of 65-66-63 to finish with a 22-under par 194, 12 strokes better than his previous best set at the 2007 NCAA Regional. He competed against 56 other golfers to take the crown, posting a scoring average of 64.67. His final round score leads the MWC as the lowest round this season, is a career-best by three strokes and ties the Colorado State program record set by Zen Brown at the 2006 Cougar Classic. With Morris leading the way, the Rams eclipsed their previous team single-round record in each of the three rounds. The Rams' overall score of 787 (-77) surpassed their 54-hole record by 42 strokes. Shelly Godkin introduced John Mattos, the CSU Swimming Coach. Shelly told us that John has been at CSU for 28 years and is the senior coach in the Athletic Department. Shelly gave us the results of the latest dual meets for the swim team at the Air Academy, which CSU won. He said that John had a record of 200 wins versus only 82 losses over his long career. John then introduced his star long distance swimmer, Kathleen McCleary. He said that over the weekend Kathleen had competed in long distance events that caused her to swim over 5000 yards. Kathleen is a sophomore from Boulder and indicated how much she liked CSU and Fort Collins and thanked us for inviting her. October 17, 2007 Cross Country Star
Bill Schaffter introduced Brian Berryhill, the CSU Crosscountry Coach, to introduce one of the student athletes. Brian introduced April Thomas, a member of the womens crosscountry team. He also told us that the womens team is ranked 14th in the country and that April was the key leader of the team. April told us how she got to CSU and how much she enjoyed the experience of competing and living in Fort Collins. September 19, 2007 Volleyball Star
Shelly "How About Those Rams" Godkin introduced CSU Volleyball coach Tom Hilbert by giving some of his outstanding win/loss records. Tom thanked the club for inviting him and his star player. Tom introduced Mekana Barnes as the two time Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week and the national Volleyball Player of the Week. Mekana thanked the club for inviting her and for supporting the team. She invited the club to the next game against TCU, the first conference game.
