Service Above Self Awards

Service Above Self
The heart of Rotary is Service Above Self. Rotarians around the world work tirelessly, volunteering their time to make their communities and their world a better place to live. To keep the spirit of service alive, Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation believe it is vital to provide recognition to those who actively participate in service activities. For the Fort Collins Rotary Club the award is given to people who contribute significantly to the betterment of life in this community. The award is intentionally left non-specific and the honoree need not be a Rotarian, although it is presented to individuals who represent the very model of Rotary.

Bill Moellenhoff joined our club in 1981. He served as President of the club in 1990-91 and, previous to that, he was the President of the Rotary Club of Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma. He joined the District Youth Exchange two years before District 5440 was formed and continues to serve. As member of that committee, he devotes six extended weekends each year to Youth Exchange plus doing the ongoing paperwork that is required throughout the year. Spirit of Rotary Award
During the 2002-2003 Rotary year, Rotarian Joe Looper suggested our club honor a new member of Rotary who quickly became involved in club activities, embracing the ideals of Rotary's Service Above Self. Initially this award was to be given to a member who has been extremely active in his or her first year of membership although we came to realize that it often takes at least that amount of time for a Rotarian to establish him/herself, therefore can be presented to more seasoned members.

Steve Laine; Recipient of the 2006-2007 Spirit of Rotary Award

Steve joined Rotary in December of 2006. Six months later, he took on chairing the Membership Committee, helped improve our Mentor program, came up with sponsor pins and helped make members more award of what Rotary was all about and made them feel welcome into our club.

Rotarian of the Year

Claude Piché; Recipient of the 2007-2008 Rotarian of the Year Award

This award recognizes a Rotarian for their all-around contribution to the success of the Rotary Club during the current year. This year's Rotarian of the Year Award recipient stands out for his commitment and involvement in various activities throughout the year. He is a board member, a contributor to the new strategic plan and an active member of the World Community Service Committee where he is and has led our Dengue Fever projects and has spent a lot of time getting other clubs to donate to our projects. He started and has led our clubs efforts to have hands on activities in international projects by planning the home building efforts in Gualan, Guatemala. He is doing the planning for members of the Gualan Rotary Club to visit us this June. Probably most importantly, he led and contributed enormous time and effort in getting our new web site up and running.
