Club member Henry Weiser will present a program called, “Was the American Frontier Unique”.

Henry Weiser

Americans are justly proud of their Western Frontier experience. What they might not know is that half a dozen other frontiers were being forged around the globe simultaneously. Just as our West was being developed by Eastern capitalism, other developing parts of the world were expanding via the capitalism of other nations. The railroad, efficient guns and communications tamed frontiers worldwide in the latter part of the 19th century. These comparisons do not deny the uniqueness of our American Western frontier, but they put it in historical perspective.

Henry is Professor Emeritus of the CSU History Department. He has published many books. Most of his books deal with the history of England, Wales and Ireland. His latest book was, "Wales: An Illustrated History" by Hippocrene Books.

Special Recognition for Betty Brown

Master Sgt. Gene Drozd

Betty Brown
Marine Master Sergeant Gene Drozd, Non-Commissioned Officer-In-Charge of Marine Recruiting in Northern Colorado came to Rotary to thank our club for the “Glasses For Iraq” program that was initiated by Betty Brown who sent them to Iraq and were distributed by her surgeon son. He presented her an MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) of meatloaf and gravy, and said it was the worst one of the lot. Betty has also collected and sent small food items that can be used to supplement and improve the MREs'. MSG Drozd also encouraged Donna Chapel whose Marine son, Josh was deploying that day.

Betty announced that a new shipment of 720 pairs of glasses was being sent soon, with 150 pairs comming from the Lions Club stash.

Paul Harris Fellowship Award

Patrick Piche

Claude Piche
Melanie Chamberlain presented a Paul Harris Fellowship to Patrick Piche, from the donation of his father, Claude Piche. She remarked that he represented well the humanitarian and service values of Rotary International. She presented the certificate, medallion and pin.

Chuck Rutenberg then presented Patrick with a Rotary Birthday coin for the act of service he rendered to an injured biker on the Leadville 100 Bike Ride.

Thank You Banner

Chiquimula Rotary President Lorena presenting food packet to young girl

Truck load of relief packets
The above pictures were sent to members of our club by members of the Chiquimula Rotary Club. They represent a thank you for our club's donation to the relief efforts for the rain caused mud slides that devastated the near-by community of La Union. The email note ended with, "QUE DIOS LOS BENDIGA Y SIGAMOS TRABAJANDO EN EQUIPO MIS AMIGOS ROTARIOS", which my Google translator roughly says it means, "may god bless and continue the teamwork of my Rotarian friends."

Last Week's Program

Phyllis Abt

George Theodore
Phyllis Abt introduced fellow club member, George Theodore, to describe his 24 day excursion to Antarctica and show us pictures that he took on the trip. George traveled with seventy-four other photographers on this trip that left Ushuaia, Argentina and included visits to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Islands, across the Scotia Sea to the Antarctic Peninsula and around the calm waters of the Antarctic Sound, before heading back through the dreaded Drake Passage to Ushuaia.

He showed us pictures of many types of birds, seals, whales, but mostly great shots of some of many types of penguins. I believe we saw pictures of Megellanic, King, Macaroni, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Royal and Emperor penguins. Throughout the presentation, George included many humorous comments to keep the audience attentive and entertained. At the end he presented a three minute picture show, including music, of many of the pictures that he took. We were all entertained by his presentation.
