Peace Corps and Friends Celebration

John Roberts
August 22 to 24, “Peace Corps and Friends” are celebrating the significant role of Fort Collins and Colorado State University in the development of the US Peace Corps. Today our own John (“Deep Thoughts”) Roberts, former Peace Corps Country Director (twice) will share plans for the celebration, and his vision for a permanent Peace Corps museum celebrating Fort Collin’s involvement.

In 1960 three Colorado State researchers, Maury Albertsons, Pauline Birkey-Kreutzer and Andrew Rice, responded to a request for proposal for the “Point Four Youth Corps”. At the same time, key supporter Hubert Humphrey was pushing Presidential Candidate John F Kennedy to propose the “Peace Corps” as part of his campaign strategy. After a long campaign day, at 2:00AM, October 14, 1960, to a patiently waiting audience on the University of Michigan campus, Kennedy did so. The concept energized America’s youth, and some say provided just the push he needed to win the Presidency. On March 1, 1961, in one of his first Presidential Orders, JFK established the Peace Corps. The CSU proposal and later work by the team would become the basis for much of the Peace Corps early training and work.

Recent statistics show that over 187,000 Americans have served in the Peace Corps, providing support and building understanding in 140 countries. The three goals of the Peace Corps are:

To help the people of interested countries and areas in meeting their needs for trained workers
To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans

More than 7,000 former Peace Corps volunteers live in Colorado – over 700 in Northern Colorado. Brochures on the “Peace Corps and Friends” celebration are on the tables today.

Don Eversoll described the purpose and guidelines of the new club Investing Fellowship and asked anyone interested to sign up on the sheets on each table.

Charlie Peterson asked members to help with peach sales, a Breakfast Club fundraiser aimed at buying dictionaries for each 3rd grader in Fort Collins. Their aim is to sell 2000 boxes of peaches @ $34 per box. Each box sold buys a dictionary. They are currently 200 boxes short of the goal. A donation of $10 also buys a dictionary if a case of delicious Colorado western slope peaches doesn't excite you.

****************

Ron Stoops announced again the highway cleanup on Aug. 16th. He recognized Merideth Radtke, who was a guest of her father, Jon Radtke. Merideth has participated in the cleanup in the past. Family members are welcome to participate in this service event.

****************

Claude Piche said the club sent around $4,000 to Edwin Oliva of the Gualan, Guatemala Rotary Club to help with the rain caused devastation of a neighboring community called La Union. The Cheyenne Rotary Club raised over $600 on very short notice.

****************

John Roberts needs Rotarians to help with the Peace Corps Celebration on Aug. 22. He needs intersection monitors for the parade that starts at Library Park at 4:45 pm. See John for more details if interested.

****************

Bill Emslie of the After Work Club asked members to participate in their clubs golf tournament fund raiser that will be held at the Pelican Lakes Golf Club in Windsor. The proceeds of the tournament will help the "Hope Lives Breast Cancer Center". Each table has an announcement and tickets for the tournament.

****************

Melanie Chamberlain asked the Foundation Committee members to meet next week, Aug. 20th, at 11:00 am. She said that she had great news about the speaker for the November Foundation Celebration meeting. Plans for that meeting will be discussed.

****************

Dawn Davis asked club members to reserve Sept. 12th for a Quad Club Picnic that will also include a Rotary Olympics. The Olympics will consist of "mild games". Her committee needs help with door prizes, food sponsors and donations for a silent auction. It should be great fun, competition and fellowship while raising money for Inspiration Playground.

****************

Susie Ewing reminded members of their security roles for the New WestFest on Aug 16 & 17th. She also asked members to sign up to help at this event if they had not done so. She and Jan gave instructions for the members who had signed up. Susie also reported on the club picnic that was held the previous Friday.

****************

Jan Bertholf announced that CSPAN is interested in what Rotarians Think About the political season. They will be here at 11-12 a.m. (right before the meeting) on 20 August. They will position themselves either inside or outside the front of the Lincoln Center. Guidelines Are:
  1. Speak with tact and reason
  2. Remember that Rotary is not a political organization, but emphasizes participation as free peoples in the democratic process
  3. My counsel is to raise the discussion to a higher plane with subjects such as:
  4. Political advertising held to the same standards as businesses and professionals
The Four Way Test as our measure. Common “Truth”, “fair to all concerned”, and “better friendships” working together for the common good
I was reminded by Ray Martinez that the first 27 seconds are critical. –Since we live in a culture of the “sound bite.” So be precise and eloquent.

Report from Exchange Student Jessica Halter

Jessica Halter
Jessica Halter, a senior at Poudre High School this year, gave the club a report of her student exchange experience in Quito, Equador. She was dressed in clothes of native Equadorians and explained each garmet. Jessica gave us a brief but interesting summary of her experiences with PowerPoint pictures. She lived with two Rotary families, was one of 120 exchange students in the country, visited the Galapagos Islancs, participated in a Jazz Band and dancing group, climbed mountains, ate bugs, traveled throughout Equador on the top of a rail car, attended bull fights and told us how we would know you were an Equadorian. Jessica was very good at trying to keep our club informed about her experience by writing notes to us throughout the year, that are listed on our web site at: Jessica's notes to our club

Her exchange partner, Maria Emilia Contreras also attended the meeting

Last Week's Program

Myra Monfort

Wes Kenney

Becky Osterberg

Kristin Sommer

Carles Ortega

Terese Kaptur
Myra Monfort introduced Wes Kenney, Music Director, to give us an introduction to the Fort Collins Symphony. Mr. Kenney led us through a three part program. He first highlighted the Symphony’s upcoming season that included series that are continued and some new events like Friday Night Lite. All of these are described in the brochure that was available on all of the tables.

Secondly, he introduced three key members of the orchestra who each told us about their training and how they got the Fort Collins Symphony. The three were cello player Becky Osterberg, flute player Kristin Sommer and tuba player Charles Ortega. Each played a short piece for us. A bio for each was available on the tables.

The third part of the program was new Executive Director, Terese Kaptur, describing her background, how she got to the Fort Collins Symphony, and her observations about the symphony. She emphasized the symphony’s efforts to perform music outside the concert hall. She suggested a partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins for some kind of event.
