We Got Symphony!!

Teresa Kaptur
Daniel Pink, in his book “A Whole New Mind” says future leaders require the skill of “symphony” – the ability to put together pieces; to synthesize rather than analyze; to see relationships between seeming unrelated fields; to detect patterns rather than give specific answers; and to invent something new by combining elements nobody else thought to pair.

Today we learn ‘symphony’ from the masters. Myra Monfort will introduce recently named Fort Collins Symphony Executive Director, Teresa Kaptur and Music Director Wes Kenney. Teresa will share her excitement and thoughts on the future of FCSO, and maestro Kenney will introduce select members of the orchestra joining us today. In turn, the orchestra members will introduce their instrument, share a bit of their passion, and give insight to its contribution to a working symphony. We get to learn, while having culture!!

As the oldest established arts organization and the only professional symphonic orchestra in Larimer County, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra maintains a significant presence in the cultural life of Fort Collins and its surrounding areas. Started as an amateur, volunteer group of musicians in 1949, the professional orchestra that we see and hear today is an important cultural asset.

Wes Kenney

Ms. Kaptur was previously the Executive Director of the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge. While at NRO, she developed and grew the staff, the budget, and individual, corporate and grants income. She also advanced NRO's education and community engagement program.

In addition to holding executive director positions with several orchestras, Ms. Kaptur has served as an arts management consultant, worked as an artist manager, and held management positions with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Winston-Salem Symphony. A composer and pianist, she holds a master of arts in music theory/composition from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

Maestro Kenney holds a Master of Music from San Francisco State University where he was tops in his graduating class and won the prestigious Carmen Dragon Prize as the best conductor in the California State University system. He also received a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from University of Southern California where he majored in Music History. Further conducting studies were taken at Die Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, the Conductors Institute, and at American Symphony Orchestra League and Conductors Guild Workshops.

Mr. Kenney is a former president of the Conductors Guild and currently serves on their advisory board.

Henry Weisser
Max Getts asked if anyone was interested in being interviewed for the Four-Way
Test Program.

Sue Wagner askes again for members to sign up to act as security for the New WestFest on August 16,17. She indicated that she hoped that enough members signed up this week so that she does not have to make a panic announcement next week.

****************

Henry Weisser wishes to announce that the Rotary History Fellowship will meet again on August 13, right after our Rotary lunch at Joe's Everyday Coffee Shop on Mason Street. Our topic this time will be: "The 1960s -- What Were They All About?"

****************

Jan Bertholf announced that CSPAN is interested in what Rotarians Think About the political season. They will be here at 11-12 a.m. (right before the meeting) on 20 August. They will position themselves either inside or outside the front of the Lincoln Center. Guidelines Are:
  1. Speak with tact and reason
  2. Remember that Rotary is not a political organization, but emphasizes participation as free peoples in the democratic process
  3. My counsel is to raise the discussion to a higher plane with subjects such as:
  4. Political advertising held to the same standards as businesses and professionals
The Four Way Test as our measure. Common “Truth”, “fair to all concerned”, and “better friendships” working together for the common good
I was reminded by Ray Martinez that the first 27 seconds are critical. –Since we live in a culture of the “sound bite.” So be precise and eloquent.

Last Week's Program

Celebration Cake
The Fort Collins Rotary Club’s 90th Birthday Celebration was kicked off early with the music of the “Little Big Band” sounds of Glenn Shull and colleagues while Rotarians visited and ate. At each place setting there was a booklet giving the history of our club prepared by John Matsushima and Bonnie Titley and printed by Essi and Mahin Shahmardian. Similar information is located on the club web site. The booklet also contained an epilogue that gave the history of our district.

Bryan Cooke

Bill Moellenhoff

After the usual introduction of visiting Rotarians and guests, Jan Bertholf exchanged club banners with assistant district governor Bryan Cooke who is also a member of the Greeley Rotary Club, our sponsoring club. Past presidents of our club and current board members then passed out commemorative coins of our 90th birthday. Members not attending can get the history booklet and coin from the secretaries’ table.

A birthday cake for the celebration was cut by the youngest member of our club, Jamie Grim, and by the longest serving member of the club, Eugene “Hud” Frink.

Bill Moellenhoff read parts of our club history while PowerPoint slides prepared by Jan showed additional information. Before Bill read each decade section, the Glenn Shull band played a song that represented that decade. Again after the meeting, the “Little Big Band” played. The committee that put together this program for our celebration deserves all of our congratulations for an outstanding job.

A birthday cake for the celebration was cut by the youngest member of our club, Jamie Grim, and by the longest serving member of the club, Eugene “Hud” Frink.
