Announcements

Claude Piche

Sue Wagner

Judy Boggs

Don Eversoll

Shelly Godkin
Claude Piche told the club of the flooding, deaths and devastation of the community of La Union, Guatemala, a community close to both Gualan and Chiquimula. He described the request of help for the victims by both of our partner clubs in Guatemala, Gualan and Chiquimula. Both clubs are helping the victims as much as possible. Claude asked members for donations to this cause and he would work through Judy Boggs, the assistant treasurer, to get the donations there as soon as possible. Members of the Rotaty Club of Cheyenne, a partner in a water project near Chiquimula, also contributed to this cause. Thanks Rotarians for your help!!

Sue Wagner asked for members to sign up to act as security for the New WestFest on August 16,17. She indicated that she hoped that enough members signed up this week so that she did not have to make a panic announcement next week.

****************

Judy Boggs indicated that there are sign-up sheets on the tables for the club picnic on July 8th. This picnic is to celebrate our club's 90th birthday and will be held at Roland Moore park. If members signed up on the sheets last week, July 23rd, they need to sign up again. She also asked members to let her know if they can help with the set up for the picnic. If so, either see or call Judy, or arrive at the picnic an hour early.

****************

Don Eversoll indicated that he is interested in starting an Investment Fellowship group. Members interested in such a group should contact Don. Don also read a thank you note from Phil Kendall for the cards that the club and Don sent to him.

****************

Shelly Godkin told members about two CSU graduates, both NCAA champions in track, who will be representing the USA in the olympics in China. Casey Mallone will be throwing the discus, an event in which he placed sixth at the last olympics. Lauri Smith will be competing in the hammer throw. We wish both lots of success.

****************

Max Getts presented Kevin Unger with a picture from the Coloradoan and read to us some inscriptions in an autograph book that he had when he was 10 years old.

Paul Harris Fellowship Award

Edward Runyan
Myra Monfort awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to her father-in-law, Edward Runyan. Edward, who now lives in Fort Collins is a past president of the Rotary Club of Marion Kentucky and also served as postmaster of that city. The award was given on July, 30th, a day after Edward reached his 90th birthday. Congratulations to Edward and thanks to Myra.

Member Survey, Member Information & Committee Selection
There is a member information and committee selection sheet for each member. It is very important that ALL members fill out this form. The information that members supply is critical for our club to function effectively and for our club to carry out our service efforts. Please help our officers and directors and committee chairs by completing this form.

Also there is a survey that the board is asking each member to fill out to help us focus the club’s efforts.

If you did not attend the July 23rd meeting, please get your forms at the secretaries’ table and return them to secretary Don Johnson. If you did attend and have not yet turned in your forms, please do so.

Last Week's Program

Claude Piche

Nick Ewing

Jessy Fiser

Lindsey Pointer
Jan Bertholf introduced Claude Piche to review the club’s efforts in Guatemala with emphasis on the recently completed home building trip to Gualan. Claude reviewed the who, what and where of the latest home building trip with particular emphasis on the family getting the home and why our club picked the CALMS (Central American Lutheran Mission Society) organization to oversee the home building.

Claude then introduced three of the six students of the team, Nick Ewing, Jessy Fiser and Lindsey Pointer. Each of them talked about different parts of their trip aided by trip pictures and/or information about past and future Matching Grant, MG, project information. Nick started by talking about the building stages and techniques for the new home and also about visiting the family in the home that was built during last years trip.

Jessy told us about the celebration at the School for the Deaf in Zacapa where our last year’s MG project provided computers and related equipment. Lindsey talked about visiting a Malnutrition Center and the money that the three Interact Clubs, two in Fort Collins and the one in Gualan, raised to help with equipment for the center. She also told us about her interview in Spanish about their activities with a Gualan TV station.

Jessy, Lindsey and Nick then each talked about some of the MG projects in Gualan and Chiquimula that our club will work on during the next year and Lindsey ended by describing the teams extremely long bus trip to the Mayan ruins at Tikal, Guatemala. The students answered a few questions; the most interesting was about what they learned from the trip.
