Guatemala Projects Update

Rotary Fort Collins’ links to Guatemala continue to grow. In June Dr. Edwin Olivia and Maynor Rossal of Gualan presented a very inspiring program, and thanked the Fort Collins Rotary for past projects, including two large Dengue Fever community education and prevention programs, a youth AIDS/pregnancy prevention program, potable water projects and construction of homes for needy families

Today we hear reports from the most recent work in Gualan and Chiquimula, including the construction of another home for a very needy family. Our Guatemala Gang will also report on several other club projects including an update on the family that received our Habitat House in 2007 as well as Dengue projects and a computer lab for a school for deaf children. You'll also glimpse some of the fellowship they shared with the Interact of Gualan and our good friends from the Rotary clubs of Gualan and Chiquimula.

The participants in this year's trip were Claude Piché, Susie Ewing, Chuck Rutenberg and Marge Norskog from the Fort Collins Rotary Club; Kara Wolley, Lindsey Pointer and Anna Beucler from InterAct; Jessie Fiser and Nick Ewing, from RotorAct, Brieana Kirkpatrick from Mathews House.

Special Visiting Rotarians

Bob Graczyk

Marla McGee
Visiting Rotarians Bob Graczyk from Niagara, NY and Marla McGee from Cypress, CA were in Fort Collins as part of the week long National Law Enforcement Explorers Conference at CSU. The National Law Enforcement Explorers are an affiliate of the Boy Scouts. At the conference around 5,000 youths from 14 to 20 from across the country get a chance to work with officials from many law enforcement agencies, with the aim of getting the attendees excited about law enformemement and giving them some basic skills and experience. Marla McGee, Bob Graczyk and Bob’s guest, Josie Carrasco of Texas, are all on the national board of this Explorers group and each are involved in law enforcement. Each of the two visiting Rotarians exchanged club banners with Jan.

Member Survey, Member Information & Committee Selection
There is a member information and committee selection sheet for each member. It is very important that ALL members fill out this form. The information that members supply is critical for our club to function effectively and for our club to carry out our service efforts. Please help our officers and directors and committee chairs by completing this form.

Also there is a survey that the board is asking each member to fill out to help us focus the club’s efforts.

If you did not attend the July 23rd meeting, please get your forms at the secretaries’ table and return them to secretary Don Johnson. If you did attend and have not yet turned in your forms, please do so.

Last Week's Program

Jan Bertholf

Bart Kingham
Celebrating and reviewing our committee service activities was the theme of our program. Club president Jan Bertholf acted as master of ceremonies to introduce members of the Board of Directors who briefly described the purpose and activities of our clubs many committees.

Before the meeting attending members were given two documents to fill out. One was to get accurate member information (correct email addresses, phone numbers, etc.) and also for members to specify in which committees they wanted to “Serve”. The second document was a survey about how the club operates and gives members an opportunity to make suggestions. Both documents are important for the club to operate effectively.

Jan then introduced board members to describe the committees under their direction. With over forty committees and two other important board functions, this took all of the program time. Most of what each board member described is included on our web pages. However, treasurer Bart Kingham reviewed the club budget in as brief a time as possible given its complexity. This was facilitated by several detailed but helpful PowerPoint slices prepared by Jan Bertholf and is not on the web site.

Bart’s presentation was followed by board members Garth McCann (Vocational Service), Tanis Roeder (International Service), Alan Ashbaugh (Community Service), Brenda Carns (Membership & Fellowship), Don Unger (Club Service I) and Dan Mackey (Club Service II) describing their respective committees and activities. Also included was a brief review of our club’s support of the Rotary Foundation by president elect Melanie Chamberlain.

Again, check the “COMMITTIES” section of our web site to review the purpose and guidelines/goals of each of these committees and to see who the committee chair(s) are.
