Celebrating Our Service

Jan Bertholf
Today we celebrate the past successes, future plans, and wide range of Rotarian service available to all in Fort Collins Rotary. President Jan Bertholf is our MC, and our six Directors will each review their committees, programs, and the opportunities for service available. Here’s a brief program so you can tell the players.

Don Unger will highlight those wild and crazy members in Club Service I, including Audits, By-Laws, Information Technology, Sergeant-at-Arms, Birthdays and Attendance. Curb your enthusiasm, Don.

Dan Mackey is responsible for Club Service II, including the Bulletin, Care and Recognition, Meeting Arrangements, CSU Student Athletes, Photography and Programs. (Better be nice here – he might be my boss.)

Working in temperatures of 115F and above, they appreciate food and water that differs from the familiar military provisions. MRI meals need some embellishment after a while!! Please consider showing your support for them and their colleagues by bringing in items we can send:
packets of KoolAid or lemonade or iced tea.
packets of your favorite seasonings--taco seasoning, herbs or spices.
NOTE: Small packets are necessary for the special forces who must travel light and carry all supplies on their backs. Donations can be brought to Rotary meetings or dropped off at 1916 Seminole.

****************

Max Getts shared an article from Forbes Magazine that illustrated the influence that Rotary can have on young lives.

****************

Jan Bertholf congratulated Bill Cook on his 90th birthday. He presented Bill with the first 4-Way Test coin form the newly minted set. Jan summarized some of the Bill's career and service activities both in the community and in and for our club. Congratulations to Bill from all of our club.

Last Week's Program

Jan Bertholf

Stuart Palmer
Jan Bertholf introduced Rotary District 5440 Governor Stuart Palmer and his wife Susie of the Jackson Hole Rotary Club. Stuart started his presentation by recognizing past district governors from our club, Max Getts, Lynne Baker, Charlie Peterson and Joe Looper who he worked closely with in his different club and district roles. He also thanked John Roberts for his work as an assistant governor.

Stuart talked about the quest and challenges to end Polio in the world and summarized the current state. One challenge example is to immunize the 25 million children born in India each year until Polio is eradicated there. Stuart indicated how special the Polio Plus program is to him because his grandfather had the disease.

He praised our club for all the service oriented projects we do and the example we provide for other clubs he referred to a few specific cases.

Of course he mentioned RI president DK Lee’s mote, “Make Dreams Real”, and his goal of helping the world’s children. Stuart is very enthusiastic about the Matching Grant process and how Matching Grants can help meet the motto. He related emotionally about his club’s Matching Grant work in Brazil. The Brazil projects started after he led a Group Study Exchange, GSE, team there in the 80’s. He feels that publicizing these efforts is an area where Rotary needs to make improvements.

He has started a club president’s blog as a sharing mechanism so that clubs can learn from each other. Club member growth is one of his and RI president DK Lee’s key goals.

He talked about the GSE program for 2009 with a district in Chile. Stuart would like all 51 district clubs to participate in a Matching Grant water project in the Chile district of the exchange. And he invited us to the District conference in Jackson Hole next April 30 through May 2, 2009 at the Snow King Resort.
