The saying, “Whisky’s for drinking; Water’s for fighting”, was first attributed to Mark Twain. Work toward the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP) began in 2004, and it’s been a fight ever since. January 4, Rotarians hear an update on NISP from Brian Werner, Public Information Officer and Head of Communications and Records for the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, based in Berthoud. Werner also serves as NISP’s Public Affairs Coordinator as the project winds its way (slowly) through the federal permitting process.
According to their website, “the Northern Integrated Supply Project is a proposed water storage and distribution project designed to supply 15 Northern Front Range water partners with 40,000 acre-feet of new, reliable water supplies.”
NISP is designed to store excess water currently leaving the state in years of abundance. Since 2009, more than 3 million acre-feet of water over and above the legal requirements left the state. The project consists of two reservoirs (Glade and Galeton) plus supply and distribution facilities. When completed, it will provide some water in all years through an exchange with two local ditch companies.
Brian Werner was born and raised in Colorado Springs, and has been active in water resources management for 35 years. He earning undergrad and master’s degrees in history from the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State University, and taught Colorado history to incoming CSU freshmen. His father was a professor and chair of the economics department at Colorado College for 38 years.
Brian and his wife, Tina Del Ponte, enjoy golfing, reading, the Denver Broncos (he was at the Super Bowl to watch his favorite team win SB 50), and their family - three daughters, a stepson, a daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. They reside in Centennial.
December 14, RCFC held our annual meeting and leadership election. Affirmed for President Elect Nominee (President 2018-19) was Steve Laine. And with tightest possible margin (1 vote) Kelso Kelly and Steve Vessey were elected to the Board of Directors for 3-year terms (2017-20). Over the course of their selection and recruitment process, the Nominations Committee evaluated 25 potential directors, including 12 women and 13 men; 4 Satellite and 21 noon members. All who stood for election were exceptionally well qualified, and can be expected to provide further club leadership.
