ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Board of Directors has approved the membership applications of Maggie Walsh.  She has met successfully with a Membership Committee representative.     Maggie is being sponsored by Taylor Hall. She is an administrator at CSU.
If there are any comments about either Maggie as a new member, or to Taylor, they should be directed to the club secretary, Rod Morrison, in writing by May 10th, one week after this notification appears in the May 3rd  2017 print Rotogear.

On April 26, 2017 the Rotary Club of Fort Collins awarded a $4,500.00 community matching grant to Front Range Chamber Players to fund three new shells to be placed behind chamber groups performing on a large stage.  The music program students of Fort Collins High School also raised $5,000.00 for the three new shells. Performances at McNeal Auditorium at Fort Collins High School and other locations will benefit more than 1,000 audience participants and 500 Fort Collins High School students.  Submitted by Robert F. Marschke, Jr.

Judy Boggs announced that hanging flower baskets will again be available as a fundraiser.  Call her to order.  Baskets available May 5.

Tammie Nieman thanked members for making the first two STEM programs, using the new kits, successful.  An additional date is set for 5/19.  Volunteers are needed for this date.  Respond to Tammie.

Marty Bachman urged everyone to alert the Care and Recognition Committee of any situation--congratulations, encouragement, medical situation, etc.--that the committee should acknowledge.  Notify Marty, Melanie Chamberlain, or Jeanne Fangman.

Dawn T-Baumgartner has volunteered to summarize program content for the Gear one meeting a month.  Volunteers are needed for the three other weeks.

Our club provides many thousands of hours of volunteer service in addition to annual giving to charitable projects. Our giving to charitable projects has not grown to keep up with inflation and growing community needs. The RCFC Legacy Fund has established as an endowment that will provide supplemental funds into the foreseeable future for humanitarian and educational programs in and around Fort Collins. Your contributions to the Legacy Fund are tax deductible and will assure “Service in Action Forever”.

President Glenn reminded us to refer club questions to Bob Meroney, our newly appointed ombudsman.

NEEDED:  The club needs a financial wizard to help with our books, especially information about donations

Phyllis Abt reminded us that the Greeley club will be celebrating their one hundredth anniversary on May 18. The speaker will be the Rotary International president.

Rotary Scholarship Recognition and Celebration
Wednesday, May 3, 2017, we will celebrate Scholarship and Fellowship when the RCFC Scholarship Committee and this year’s scholarship winners help celebrate and declare our support for higher education.  As always, scholarships are funded through the RCFC Member generosity and the families of two former Rotarians.  The Morrison Memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. June Ogden in memory of her father, James Morrison, who served as Director of Cooperative Extension at Colorado A & M.  The Richard W. Schump Memorial Scholarship was established by David and Liz Schump in memory of their son, Richard.  The scholarship is generously continued by the Schump family after the untimely death of David and Liz in 2011.  Our program host will be our Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Susan Gutowsky.

Our keynote speaker will be Danielle Clark, Poudre School District’s Executive Director of Communication, who will share the power of mindfully setting personal and career goals and working diligently to achieve them.

Finally, incoming CSU/FRCC Rotaract President Lisa Evans will offer our scholars exciting learning opportunities through Rotaract service projects.

This year your Rotary Scholarship Committee reviewed more than 60 applications, interviewed 15 students and selected 10 recipients based on need, scholarship, community service and leadership.  This required many dedicated hours from our Rotarians and PSD counseling staff.  The students exhibited great skills, talents, creativity, work ethic and service to our community.  According to the committee, each of our recipients is very deserving of our financial support.  Rotarians who participated in the selection and the planning of our celebration include Phyllis Abt, Del Benson, Betty Brown, Jean Griswold, Susan Gutowsky, Jud Harper, Judy Lane, Sally Lee, Rob Marschke, Bob Meroney, Ralph Smith, Robin Steele and Henry Weisser.

Before and during the program, we will have an opportunity to meet the student scholarship recipients.
Teacher of the Month
This month the Rotary Club honored Julie Otto who is a reading specialist at Olander Elementary School. She told us of how she carries on small group reading interventions from kindergarten to the fifth grade. She devotes time and energy to working with students as they progress from learning to read to reading to learn. Julie finds her greatest reward in observing “the aha moments” when the reading light bulbs go on in the minds of students. She is also involved with a program to get books into the homes of low income families. Julie works in the school’s  Literacy Lab and seeks to promote a safe and caring environment for students as they take up reading challenges. Julie truly enjoys working the teachers and staff at Olander Elementary as a committed specialist in her vital field.
