This week Rotarians will appreciate the power of The Rotary Foundation and Rotary’s Global Matching Grants program, when Uhambo USA Founding Director Lucinda Kirchensteiner and Director Robin Steele share experiences from their recent project visit to the Huis Talje Children’s Home in Bela Bela (or Warmbaths), South Africa.  Lucinda and Robin are both RCFC Satellite members.

Lucinda and Robin initiated and led TRF Project #16396, providing $35,000 worth of wheelchairs, custom fitting, staff training, community outreach and support to children with disabilities at the Huis Talje Children’s Home.  For this project, RCFC partnered with the Warmbaths Rotary Club and received matching grants from TRF.

Lucinda Kirchensteiner graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a BA in German Studies, and completed her MBA in Colorado State University’s Global Social & Sustainable Enterprise (2008) program which focuses on using business as a means for solving social challenges in developing countries.  In 2008 Lucinda’s graduate work took her to Southern Africa to research the mobility aid sector and provide business support services to a small scale wheelchair manufacturer in Zambia.  In 2010 she launched the U.S. nonprofit, Uhambo, to support the activities and programs in Southern Africa.

Robin holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Utah State University, a master’s degree in computer science and computer engineering from the University of Minnesota, and an Executive MBA from the Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management.  She is the current IPG Committee chair, a member of the Scholarship Committee, past chair of the Peach Festival Committee and past member of STEM.
